What kind of traveller are you today? Maybe you want the glamour of Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo. Or perhaps you’re a history fan curious about the Nuragic civilisation. You might be a hiker drawn to the mountains, or just want to enjoy a glass of Cannonau at sunset.

The people are warm, the food is fantastic, and the wine flows like a river, which makes the experience even more special!

But here is the reality check: Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily.

Without a smart plan, you’ll spend your week behind the wheel instead of on the beach. I learned that the hard way, so you don’t have to.

That’s exactly why I created this itinerary.

This guide is based on my real road trip. I built this 7-day Sardinia itinerary around three strategic bases: Alghero, Olbia, and Cagliari, to solve the distance problem.

This route keeps driving times manageable, so you get the glamorous Emerald Coast, ancient Nuraghe ruins, colourful villages, and still have time to relax.

Do you need a car in Sardinia?

Yes. A rental car is essential for this itinerary. Public transport is limited, and many of the best beaches and Nuraghe sites are only accessible by car.

A Quick Note for First-Timers (I Was One Too)

When I planned my first Sardinia trip, every photo I saved screamed one thing: Costa Smeralda. The emerald water, Porto Cervo's yachts, Spiaggia del Principe… I thought that was Sardinia.

So when you see we don't reach Costa Smeralda until Day 4, you might think: "Isn't that too late?" I thought the same… until I drove the island.

Here's Why This Route Works Better: Landing in Cagliari and heading straight to Costa Smeralda means spending your week in Sardinia's most touristy, expensive corner.

You'd miss:

• Wild west coast beaches

• Rainbow houses of Bosa

Starting in Alghero → Olbia → Cagliari means Costa Smeralda hits after you've experienced real Sardinia. You still get a full Day 4 for Emerald Beaches and Porto Cervo, plus optional La Maddalena.

Sardinia from 3 Bases

Sardinia is a large island with several distinct regions! So, we established three bases to take full advantage of everything we wanted to explore.

We selected Alghero, Olbia, and Cagliari for their infrastructure and strategic location!

Alghero is in the northwest of the island! This charming town has a spectacular coastline. The city also preserves a strong Catalan influence in its architecture and culture.

Olbia is in the northeast. It is the gateway to exploring the famous Costa Esmeralda! Never heard of its stunning beaches and picturesque villages? The region is also known for the remains of the Nuragic civilization.

Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is south of the island. It boasts a captivating historical heritage, with fortresses, cathedrals, and old quarters. The city is also an important cultural and gastronomic center.

Driving Distances in Sardinia

Day 1: Arrival - Exploring the Beauty and History of Sardinia

After landing at Cagliari airport, we picked up our rental car from RentalCars. We set out for Alghero, an enchanting city.

The drive takes about three hours, and there are a few interesting stops along the way.

The Road to Alghero: Must-See Stops

1. Oristano - This historic city on the west coast of Sardinia is home to beautiful beaches. A great one is Spiaggia di Is Arutas. Visit the old town and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

2. Tharros - Near Oristano, the historical site of Tharros is a top attraction. An ancient Phoenician settlement, inhabited by Carthaginians and Romans, offering a glimpse into the past.

3. Penisola del Sinis - Dive into cliffs, lagoons, and breathtaking beaches like Spiaggia di Mari Ermi. Houses the ruins of Tharros, where you can combine history and nature!

4. Bosa - Stop at the picturesque medieval town of Bosa. On the banks of the Temo River is a well-preserved historic center. Admire its colorful houses and the imposing Castello dei Malaspina.

As lovers of ancient history and culture, we opted for a stop in Tharros. After a quick lunch in Oristano, we headed to the ruins.

Arriving in Alghero: Exploring the Enchanting City

Upon arriving in Alghero, a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere greeted us! Stroll the cobblestone streets and admire the stone facades. The city has a strong Catalan influence, reflected in the local language and cuisine.

We stayed at the Hotel Catalunya, a tourist-class hotel outside the walled city! It has no charm other than its rooftop.

Suggestions for Activities in Alghero

• The Historic center of Alghero is perfect for a stroll. Explore the Cathedral of Santa Maria. Admire the medieval walls and enjoy the stunning sea views. The small shops and cafes along the streets invite you to stop for a gelato.

• At the end of the day, there is nothing better than trying delicious Sardinian cuisine. Taste typical dishes, such as fregola with seafood and local wine! "Al Refettorio" restaurant is a great option.

The day in Alghero promises to be the perfect introduction to the beauty and culture of Sardinia! A start off on the right foot!

Day 2: Exploring Alghero History and Beaches

On the second day, we'll discover all Alghero offers, from its best beaches to rich historical attractions.

Visiting Local Beaches

Start the day relaxing on Maria Pia Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.

With crystal clear waters and white sands, this is the ideal place to relax and sunbathe. The beach is surrounded by pine trees, providing shade and a charming setting.

Water Activities in Maria Pia

For the more adventurous, Maria Pia offers a range of water activities. Try snorkeling to explore the vibrant marine life, or rent a kayak for a unique sea experience. Sailing along the rocky coastline, you can discover hidden coves.

Visit the Palmavera Archaeological Site

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in local history! Visit the Palmavera archaeological site.

This impressive Nuragic complex takes us back to the Bronze Age! Towers and buildings reveal much about the ancient Sardinian civilization.

The local guide told fascinating stories about the Nuragics' life and practices.

Cave Tour

Or, opt for the Alghero caves, a true natural wonder. The Neptune Caves offer spectacular views of the rock formations and stalactites.

The descent of the 654-step staircase is an adventure! Rewarded by an incredible view of the sea and the caves.

At the end of the day, we went for a drink at the hotel rooftop with a sensational view of the sea and the old city! We had a delicious fish for dinner at Nautilus!

Alghero is brimming with natural beauty and rich history! A perfect day to combine fun, adventure, and culture!

Day 3: From Alghero to Olbia

Heading to Olbia

Today, we leave Alghero and head towards Olbia. It is about a 1.5-hour drive, with several interesting stops.

Getting Around and Sightseeing in Sardinia

As you drive, enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Sardinia! Majestic mountains, lush green fields, and breathtaking views!!

Suggested Stops

1. Sassari: The second largest city in Sardinia, rich in history and culture. Visit the Cathedral of San Nicola and explore the charming historic center. origenous, full of shops and cafes.

2. Porto Torres: A port town with relevant Roman ruins. Visit the Basilica of San Gavino, one of the oldest churches in Sardinia. Sample fresh seafood at one of the seaside restaurants.

3. Castelsardo: A picturesque town with a hilltop castle. Explore the narrow streets and the Basket Museum. The Museum highlights the local basket-weaving tradition. The views of the sea are stunning!

Arriving in Olbia

We stayed at the Jazz hotel, located near the airport! It has its own parking and easy access to the roads. It is a comfortable 4-star hotel.

Arriving in Olbia, we felt a welcoming atmosphere and a vibrant city center.

We started our exploration at Piazza Matteotti! What a variety of shops, cafes, and a bustling vibe!

Visit the Church of San Paolo! Stroll through the streets, admiring the local architecture.

Olbia is famous for its proximity to the stunning Costa Smeralda! Finally, our next destination!

Day 4: The Stunning Costa Smeralda

The Costa Smeralda is one of Sardinia's postcards! Who has never seen a picture of the turquoise waters and stunning landscapes?

The coast gets its name from the emerald-green waters that contrast with the white sands. Here, find some of Sardinia's best beaches!

They have pristine conditions for swimming and sunbathing. The clear waters also provide excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving.

In this region, three must-see spots stand out: Porto Cervo, Golfo Aranci, and Porto Rotondo.

We start the day at Spiaggia del Principe, one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Smeralda.

We then head to Porto Cervo, the elegant heart of the Costa Smeralda. The luxurious marinas, designer boutiques, and excellent dining offer a sophisticated experience.

We continued our journey to Porto Rotondo. It is a coastal village that charms with its bars and restaurants on the seafront. We had lunch at one of the many establishments with panoramic views.

To end the day, we visited Golfo Aranci! Home to the stunning Spiaggia Bianca! What a marvelous landscape!

Dine at one of Olbia's excellent restaurants. Ristorante Il Pescatore is an option for fresh seafood dishes and typical Sardinian cuisine.

Travel Tips

• If you have an extra day, visit the island of La Maddalena by ferry from Palau. The island is stunning. But Caprera, the second largest in the archipelago, is even more impressive! Cross a bridge and discover wild beaches that can only be reached on foot or by boat!

• If you prefer to explore the history, visit the Nuraghe di Cabu Abbas. It is an important archaeological site. This nuraghe is an ancient building that tells us about the history of Sardinia. It is fascinating to see how these structures were built and imagine life back then.

Day 5: From Olbia to Cagliari

Today is the day to leave for Cagliari, the vibrant capital of Sardinia. The journey takes approximately three hours. We opted not to stop to enjoy the day in this city rich in history and culture.

Accommodation

We stayed at the recently opened Palazzo Tirso MGallery, which exceeded our expectations. The hotel offers comfortable rooms, a delicious breakfast, and a privileged location.

Arrival and First Impressions of the City

Upon arriving in Cagliari, the vibrant energy captivated us. The center is bustling, with shops and cafes. The historical monuments invite us to explore. One of the first stops was Piazza Yenne, where we enjoyed a local gelato while watching the people go by.

Exploring Cagliari

For the rest of the day, we decided to venture through the narrow streets of the Castello district! You can find ancient buildings and stunning city and sea views. Go to the Bastione di Saint Remy, where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Local Gastronomy

Try typical dishes such as fregula with seafood or the traditional porceddu. Recommended restaurants: Ristorante Antica Cagliari and Sa Domu Sarda.

Day 6: Exploring the Wonders of Cagliari

Today is the perfect day to immerse yourself in the culture of Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia.

Visit to the Historic Castello District

We begin our journey through the historic district of Cagliari. Bairro de Castello, the historic heart of the city. Visit the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria, a beautiful example of medieval architecture! Walk through the narrow streets, admiring the traditional architecture and panoramic views.

Discovering Archaeological Sites

We headed to the Roman Amphitheatre, one of Sardinia's most impressive archaeological sites. This building was built in the 2nd century AD. It is an excellent place to learn about the history! Imagine the spectacles that once occurred!

Relaxing on the Beaches of Poetto

To end the day, we relaxed on the stunning Poetto beach! With a long stretch of sand, it is perfect for a refreshing swim or a contemplative stroll at sunset. It is the ideal place to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and appreciate the magic of Sardinia.

Day 7: Last Moments in Cagliari

We have reached our last day on this incredible trip to Sardinia! It is time to make the most of the moments left in Cagliari.

Farewell at the San Benedetto Market

We started the day with a sensory experience at the San Benedetto Market, a large and vibrant market. We tasted delicious local products, like cheeses, cold cuts, and wines.

Souvenir Shopping and Local Gastronomy

Explore shops in the center for nice souvenirs, such as ceramics and handicrafts. Do not forget to pick up Sardinian wine or a bottle of Mirto, the traditional drink of the island.

We had lunch at a local restaurant. Taste the delicious malloreddus (Sardinian pasta). These flavors will leave a long-lasting memory of our trip.
