At the end of the day, we bought some cheese and wine and sat on the balcony watching the sunset. Divine! The snow-capped peaks of Mont Blanc glow orange as the sun sets.

5. Cable Car to Mont Saleve: Geneva Local Mountain

Last, take a cable car ride to the summit of Mont Salève, 1907m. This quick and scenic ride takes you to the summit of Geneva's local mountain, Mont Saleve, in just a few minutes. A single return ticket costs EUR 18.


Several hiking paths link the station to the observatory, which is 150 meters up. The Salève is also known for its numerous rocky passages! Some are official trails, others are reserved for people without a tendency to vertigo. I confess I did not take these!

  • Stargazing nights. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, nighttime cable car rides to the top of Mont Saleve for stargazing are offered. An incredible experience! A tour led by an astronomer. Admire the sky and the stars while enjoying a drink!

If you do not have a car, you can also take a bus from Geneva to Veyrier. It is a village at the foot of Mont Saleve. From Veyrier, take the cable car to the summit. The bus ride takes about 30 minutes, and the cable car ride takes about 10 minutes.
